Frame by Frame

Frame By Frame Animation

I thought i would create my own company to head all of my animations with, i have always wanted to be a part of one, but if its my own company then that is even better. i have my studio set up in my room and am working on many projects that will be very slow in terms of production due to the amount of uni work we have on at the moment, but its a start! after all, we all have to start somewhere!

Help with presentations and such

The seminars all helped alot with elements of the creative industry that apply to my ventures but I felt that a few of the seminars could be condensed into one blog post as they are all very similar, they all strive to assist with the presentation of a certain type of thing that we will be needing to produce throughout the year.

Firstly: Effective presentation tips

We will be creating a few presentations over the year so getting them right is a big requirement as we will be presenting them in a professional manor!

The main points to consider are:

  • Know your audience
  • Know the story or journey in which the presentation is created for
  • keep it simple
  • too much text is too confusing, and the audience don't read it if you are presenting it.
  • use colours that work! don't use contemporary colours

Secondly: How to present well

as well as creating the presentation we will also be presenting them to our peers, so for those of us who have never presented in a professional manor it gives us a guide to presenting well, and to avoid anxieties

the main points to consider are:

  • rehearse your presentation instead of memorizing it
  • drink lots of water
  • keep calm by breathing
  • get the blood flowing by being active while you present
  • keep your head up and off the screen
  • show appreciation to the topic at hand

don't resort to imagining your audience in their underwear!

COPYRIGHT

Copyright gives the creator of a piece of art whether it be music, painting, film etc.  to have lawful justification to call it their own, and their work is protected by a law that guarantees them that no one can use it unless permission is given by the creator.

What can you Copyright?
Basically anything that has been produced as the result of
independent intellectual effort, or as the result of a collaborative effort.

This includes stories, scripts, lyrics and other literary works

As the seminar explained, there is no registration system for copyright. once you create something it is yours, and is copyrighted for Life plus 70 years, so however long one lives and then 70 years after one passes away.

Here is the bit that will apply to me equally as much:

If you want to use someone's work within yours, you need to request permission, if its an individual, an email would suffice, but if its a company then you will have to contact the team that is responsible for copyright.

most people would give you permission, but some would request payment or something along those lines.

so after learning the importance of copyright i will feel confortable in my future ventures that i wont stumble across some horrible copyright law.

Who am I?

This seminar was about searching into the mind and revealing to ourselves what kind of person we are and how we would go about leading our lives, the reason is to reflect on this and apply it to our practice

Another aspect of this process was to find out whether we are introvert or extrovert.

i already had a bit of experience with this due to a book i read before uni which delves deep into these attributes and helps you decide for yourself which one applies to you

Quiet

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

this seminar used different graphs and handouts to help us all pinpoint exactly what kind of person we are, by analysing what our priorities are and how we live our lives. this can help us to make adjustment where necessary or to just tweak the way in which we see how other people lead their lives and to appreciate that everyone is different.

reflective practice!

“Reflective practice is learning through examining what we think happened on any occasion, and how we think others perceived the event and us, opening up our practice to the scrutiny of others.”

From the seminars in which attended as our module PPP, there are many aspects of our practice that we needed to realise, this set of blogs will examine these aspects and record my understanding of them.

we start with reflective practice, this practice is going to be a big part of our uni lives, its the basic principle of reflecting on why you did what you did and how its going to effect you in the future.

there are various things that were highlighted as being what our tutors want when we reflect on our practice:

  • You to articulate and express a personal insight into what happened.

  • How did it affect you (positive/negative) but importantly why.

  • What did you learn from the experience (of doing the brief/module/working with others)?

  • Could you have done something differently to change the experience? (planning/organisation/research/technical execution)

  • What would you do differently if the opportunity arose to do something again

this seminar also fits in with reflective writing, its the same principle as that of reflective practice just put into text. so to reflect on this reflection process, this will be a high priority of focus and will be an ongoing process when it comes to my work.

Matthew Albanese

This guy is my absolute HERO!!

Artist Matthew Albanese creates small-scale detailed models using common household materials to create rich landscapes. Using materials like cotton, sugar, tile grout, charcoal, a range of spices, and other easily available materials, Alabanese molds his “strange worlds.”

He uses false perspective to make his miniatures look like a life-size photo-realistic scene. just looking at his images make me want to start creating models! he is a huge inspiration of mine.

Here are just a few examples of his astonishing work.

every blog makes me more convinced that this is what i want to do, not just to create models, but to bring them to life!!

and animation is a perfect gate in which to do so!

My Scene

Here is the scene in which I have created, the green screen is a sheet of turquoise material as I didn't have time to organize and book a whole set with the proper equipment, but I will research into how to make do with what I've got. as its only a short clip about what I want to achieve the quality doesn't have to be film standard.

If i were to film this again i would definitely try and source the proper equipment to make things easier for me in the long run.

Plan for Animated self

For my animated self i have decided to superimpose myself acting out a short scene incorporated with one of my hand made model sets, this is what I would like to learn more about next year and hopefully progress and develop enough to use it as a destination as to where i want to be in the future!

Here is the setup of my scene:

Being as though the clip has to be around 15 seconds long, the narrative cant be that complex, so the scene i have decided to devise is me sitting at the table and taking a bite of something.

Love Monster

Earlier last year, a group of us collaborated to enter a competition that required you to create a short animation for one of the books written by Rachel Bright, who wanted an advert for her book.

i was responsible for creating the house in which the monster resides:

I constructed the house using a mixture of foam board and cardboard for the wooden panels that you see here.

We didnt win the competition, but i did have a realisation of the love i have for model making, especially as they are being used in animation it gets me very excited. so what it has made me think is that i will use one of my models in my Animated Self to superimpose me in one of them!!

VAN

VAN Night.

My good friend Will is doing a course at Leeds met uni, and came up to me with his idea of holding events around Leeds to appreciate the work of local budding artists.
the VAN night stands for 'Video art night' so its all manor of video art, whether it be graphics, animation or film.
i was asked to take the responsibility of collecting art from my uni and encouraging people to submit their work, as it was a great way to get your work and name out there.

the night itself was short as we didn't have many submissions, but you have to start somewhere! but it gave me the chance to see other students work and see how they are coping with briefs set and other work they encounter.

we plan to make this a monthly thing in the near future and try and grow our audience and substitutions over time, but it was still a great learning experience.

Animated self!

As you are already aware i am very font of the lord of the rings and such films similar, like avatar etc. and most of these would not have been possible without the technology we have today.
the main element i want to focus on is green screening! or Keying.

this method uses a vibrant background (mostly green) to key out the unwanted parts of the clip to replace with a different background without having horrible looking edges.

Here are a few examples:

As you can see above, some studios use blue to get a different result.

this image shows the before and after (left to right)

I have decided i want to look further into these techniques, and what better way to do it than to do it for my Animated Self task.

Mariel Clayton

Inspiration

As you are aware i am very fond of creating my own models.

it is restricted at the moment to just the buildings/objects etc. but after seeing the very strange work of Mariel Clayton, why cant i not evolve to doing sets for animations! it would encompass various different aspects of the things i love, and make them more accessible to involve in animating with them!

Here are some examples of her work!

some people would just class her work as being 'playing with a barbie doll' but as you can see it is addressing much more serious issues, such as suicide, re-birth, family, man slaughter and many more. so i suppose its the deep emotions that her work invokes that reminds me of what i strive to do in all my own work. the constant feelings that it induces. but also the attention to detail is what i can relate to, i can imagine she is a perfectionist like myself. also the lifelike poses in which she portrays with the dolls, at first i didn't like her work but the more i investigated the more fascinating it was!

Hacked

Pictoplasma website Hacked!!

the astounding website and organisation 'pictoplasma' focuses on the art of character design, from the most bizarre to the breathtaking. i love the scope of what is created and how strange some of the creations can be

All these wonderful and bizarre creations have made me strive to increase my skills of character design, as that is the one aspect of animation i am really dreading, i cant create lifelike drawings, but i think i make up for this with the simplicity of the characters i do develop, they have more of a like-ability factor, i prefer to give them a deeper back story or narrative to follow. i think the best characters are ones that people remember the most, and simplicity is the way to do that.

But horrible news struck this organisation as there website was hacked!! making them lose 10 years of artwork and documents. this only begs the question why would you not back things up? this really makes me aware of how vulnerable your digital elements are. the first thing i do when i get home is to back up my computer.

Who am I? Why am I here? What do I want to learn?

What ways will I evaluate my progress?

As well as using my module feedbacks to evaluate what I will improve and how to do it, I will also rely a lot on my peers, as I think they are crucial to the development of ones development. but also if i take regular moments to step back and evaluate my progress to make sure I'm still on track. also if I compare my progress of that of animations that inspire me (not to copy their ideas or anything) but these animations could have been the animations that convinced me to go down this road.

Who am I? Why am I here? What do I want to learn?

What things do I want to improve?

Just my overall understanding of the fundamentals of animation, my understanding of how things move through space and how they should be represented in an animation. but I think that my main elements that I want to improve are my drawing skills, they could be better when drawing frame after frame of the same character. as they need to be the same every time just in different configurations.

Who am I? Why am I here? What do I want to learn?

What skills do you think are your strengths?

I really enjoy making models, fantasy architecture mainly, and I see myself using them alot in the future with animation, other skills I consider strengths are my narrative skills. in most of my work I try and give a small narrative to help me better think of what I am doing next, and I love to create stories and narratives through animation! I like to shock the viewer, not in a bad way but in a thought provoking way. these skills as well as what I will learn over the 3 years will help me get to where I want to be ... which is still undecided!

Who am I? Why am I here? What do I want to learn?

What do you want to learn during your time on the programme?

Previously i have worked on 3DS Max and Maya, i loved working with them but didnt have the training or knowledge to create things at a professional standard so i would like to achieve that. but also learn the fundamentals of animation and what it means to be an animator! so i would like to experiment with every aspect of animation to better understand what i want to specialize in further.

Who am I? Why am I here? What do I want to learn?

Why you chose to study on this programme?
  1. Initially i had my heart set on stafford university to do a course on stop motion but it was the interview here that made me suddenly change my mind and accept my offer here, for a few reasons, one being that the staff were very welcoming and my kind of people and two, the course offered many more doors down the corridor of animation rather than just stop motion which could result in a wide variety of outcomes.
